A place straight out of a child's dream
The fascinating story of the Facteur Cheval
Born in April 1836, Ferdinand Cheval was lucky enough to go to school, since at the time it was not compulsory. From age 6 to 12, he learned to read, write and count, before becoming a baker's apprentice. After a few years away from Charmes-sur-l'Herbasse, his native village, he returned to the country and became a rural letter carrier. But no bicycle and even less car. Instead, he walked some thirty kilometers every day! In April 1879, Ferdinand Cheval stumbled over a strange stone on his rounds. This "painful encounter" rekindled a forgotten dream: to build a fairytale palace.

💬"Since nature wants to make sculpture, I'll make masonry and architecture."
From then on, every day on his rounds, he selected and collected pebbles. And every night, for 33 years, he would build, alone, a spectacular monument inspired by nature, postcards and his boundless imagination. In 1912, his dream came true: the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval was finally completed. A titanic work measuring 26 m wide, 14 m long and 8 to 10 m high, this "one-man show" was classified as a historical monument by André Malraux in 1969, under the heading of naïve art. It became a world reference for art brut, and was honored with tributes from numerous artists (Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, André Breton...).
💡 In your opinion, how many hours did he spend making his dream a reality?*
